Martyn Fisher is a consultant solicitor with the firm. He qualified as a solicitor in 1988 and worked for a criminal defence practice, Mattila's in Electric Avenue, Brixton before joining Brighton Law Centre where he specialised in employment and mental health law representing clients in Industrial and Mental Health Review Tribunal hearings.
Martyn was a partner at Sinclair Taylor and Martin in North Kensington from 1995 until 2003 where he was responsible for both the criminal law and mental health law departments. He was a consultant at Peter Kandler & Co from 2003 before joining Birds in 2011.
Martyn was the lead solicitor in the European Court of Human Rights case of Tahery and Al-Khawaja -v- The United Kingdom (2009) in which the European Court found in favour of the applicants. The case fundamentally challenged aspects of the use of hearsay evidence in the UK jurisdiction and caused somewhat of a furore in legal establishment circles. The UK government is currently trying to have the judgement overturned.
Martyn has very considerable experience in advising and representing clients suspected of criminal offences. He regularly attends police stations to advise and assist clients covering the whole range of criminal offences and frequently appears as a trial advocate in the Magistrates and Youth courts. He is a Duty Solicitor.
